Requirements for All County

Directors,

Attached is the list of scales required for each instrument.  I have listed the concert pitch at the top of the column and then listed the instruments starting pitch below.  These are the scales that they are required to play.  You will need to use the scale sheet at www.ncbandmasters.org for the correct octaves for each instrument.  The articulation for the scales will be:

Scale #1: Tongue

Scale #2: Slur

Scale #3: Tongue

Scale #4: Slur

Chromatic: Slur

master-scale-list-starting-pitch

This is true for every instrument except trombone, which all scales should be tongued.  If a trombone player wants to correct me on this, I will make the adjustments.

If I have any of the scales listed incorrectly on the attached sheet, someone please let me know so that I can correct them and submit them again.  Also, we will use the order that is on the scale sheet for district.  I know that for most instruments this begins with Concert F, instead of B-flat.  Please tell your students to check their scale sheet and the articulation page that will be on the stand to make sure that they are playing the correct scale.  Finally, MS students can use their scale sheet, HS students must have the scales memorized. No scale sheets will be allowed in HS audition rooms.  Tell your student not to even bring it back to the audition room, leave it in the warm-up area.

Solos can be found at www.ncbandmasters.orgPLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE make sure that your student has the correct edition of the solo. We do not want any student coming into the room with the wrong solo and having to implement our plan for correcting.

Each student will sight-read a selection as part of the audition.  They will have 30 seconds to look over, finger through, but not play the sight-reading.  When that 30 seconds is up, they will be ask to play the selection and then their audition is over.

We want the audition to run as smoothly as possible.  I have broken down the judges rooms as far as I think I can and I will send out the judging assignments by Friday of next week.  I was able to fill all of the slots with no extras.  I believe this will make the auditions run smoothly and quickly and hopefully with the set-up of the rooms, we will be finished auditioning by 7:30-8:00 at the absolute latest and hopefully gone and home by that time.  But at the same time, please remember that the auditions are about the students and we don’t want to rush simply because we want to get home.  We need to be efficient, but we need to be thorough as well.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at rayj2@gcsnc.com.  Please try to avoid the reply all or even reply because that goes to Nathan.  If I think your question needs to be addressed by the entire group of directors, I will forward the question to them.  Thanks.

Where to Send Registration Forms for All County

OK!! Let me first apologize about the confusion!! I sent out an email about pre-registration without checking with the powers to be at first.

Now…. If you read the last email about All-County from Nathan/Jeremy, it tells you where to send your registration names. I’m the middle school chair. So middle school directors, please send me your names by Jan. 16th. If you think the kid may or may not come to audition…. Send their name to me anyway. I would rather delete than add. (I’m new to this!)

High school directors…. Please send you information to Ricardo Reid. Please get in touch with Ricardo for more directions for the high school directors.

Judges

Even if you have no students auditioning, you are still expected to be there to judge.  As you know, we barely have enough judges anyways, we need all hands on deck. Also, please have any student teachers that you may have fill out the forms just previously sent as we will use them to judge too. Thanks.

All County Band Auditions

Dear Directors,

It is that time of year again.  Auditions, auditions, and more auditions, and oh yes, clinics too.

I have attached two files that you need to download or save, fill out, and send to the following people.

File #1: 08-09 All County Band Director Registration

This form will be used to place director’s into the appropriate rooms for judging.  If you have a specific instrument request or a specific need, please put that in and we will try to establish those request.  However, this date should be clear on everyone’s calendar for the auditions.  Also, if you will have a student teacher or know someone that can and is willing to judge, please list them also so that we can have enough people.  Finally when you finish filling out the sheet, all of these sheets should be sent to Jeremy Ray at Southeast Guilford High School.  I will put together a list of judging assignments and send those out prior to the auditions.  If you have already saved this file and filled in the appropriate needs for All-District, you can just send me that file.

File #2: 08-09 All County Band Registration

This form is the pre-registration form so that we will know how many students you will have attending the audition.  This is the same form that is used for All-District, so if you have that form, please just send it.  Also, USE THE FORM.  If you don’t use the form, it will be returned to you to fill out correctly, we do not have time to type in the names of each individual student that is auditioning.  Finally, here is where you send the form and you must send it electronically.  You need to send the form to two people, the chairperson and the scoring chair.  Here is where:

MS:

Stephanie Linville – MS Audition Chair

Brad Haywood – MS Scoring Chair

HS:

Jeremy Ray – HS Audition Chair

Ricardo Reid – HS Scoring Chair

Finally, the students need to play the following for the audition:

Scales: Concert B-flat, E-flat, A-flat, F, and Chromatic (The scales  need to be played in the order that they are in on the sheet for the All-District solos.  This may be different for each instrument.)

**HS scales must be memorized, MS scales do not have to be memorized.

Solo: We will use the Central District All-District Solo List.  Also, if a solo is longer than two pages, we will only use the first two pages of the solo.

Sight-Reading: There will be sight-reading for each instrument.

That is all I can think of right now.  I’m sure over the next month, there will be more information coming.  For those going to the district auditions, see you Saturday.  For everyone else, see you at our next meeting or the auditions.

HS Concentration Input

This e-mail is for high school teachers,

The attached file is a suggested course of study for each content area of arts education. As you already know, concentrations in a course of study are recommended for high school students in the Future-Ready course of study. To complete a concentration, a student must complete four credits of a course. This will in no way limit that student from taking more than four. In the plan I have developed, those additional courses would be included as “enrichment” courses.

As of now, my colleagues in other content areas have elected not to include concentrations meaning we would be the first and only area with concentrations. Dr. Zwadyk has asked me to develop arts education concentrations for students who choose to complete the concentration. I asked for enough time to get teachers’ input in all areas before I submit this plan to her for approval. Please take a moment to look over your specific area and e-mail me with questions, suggestions, etc. Since you all are the ones who have to live with what we choose, I value your input.
