Last year we had 2 HS Bands for Jazz
We need to decide and outline if we are going to do it again
Discussion
- Sefan- Wants to do it again; gets more students involved
- Ed- Concert is longer
- Directors Voted for 2 bands
What do we do if we don’t have enough instrumentation?
- Eddie- We should have the same instrumentation. Should we take away instrumentation form the top band or leave it up to the chair?
- Ricardo- last year we pulled students from our own jazz bands that would be willing to play
- Andy- For orchestra he looks at last year’s AC Band audition results and asked students, in order, if they would like to participate
- Nathan- Do we want to go to a combo?
- Andy- the more kids the better
- Voted to have two equal size large bands
- Voted for: if not enough we go to last years AC Band Auditions
Who will work the second group?:
- Chuck would like to see two GCS directors direct the second band instead of having a director for each song
- Juli- should we wait for the auditions before we decide?
- Chuck- We should open it up to middle school directors because there are directors of jazz bands as well.
- Juli- Should we wait for Nathan to check to make sure the AC Jazz sub code will be allowed for directors that do not have students involved?
- Andy- Table the discussion
- Chuck Seconded
When auditions are judged Chuck will give the tapes a number so the judges don’t know who the students are.
- Ed- in the email we should have a script
- Andy- Tell you students not to say anything and make sure to write the name on the tape
- October 29th 2010 Audition Tapes are due
- Ed suggested that we group the judges into brass, rhythm and woodwinds
Other Topics
Chuck works with Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corp the are going to do an all day clinic.
- July 16th at Brown Summit
- Nathan said that Brian McMath will provide instruments for graduation
Ed Kimbrough’s notes from College Admissions Talk
by: Melissa Kotacka Assistant Director of Admissions UNCCH 5/17/10
There is no “Secret Formula” for college admission at UNCCH. It’s a holistic review. The admissions process is like a stool with four legs and a seat. The five areas include academic performance, essays, recommendations, test scores, and extra-curricular activities. The stool needs its seat as well as all four legs.
They look for a broad foundation in core subject areas and expect the best you can do where you are. Students must meet the minimum requirements. Students admitted to UNC usually exceed requirements. The minimum requirement for foreign language is two years. Many students are accepted with only two years although many others take more. Admissions officials understand scheduling constraints. Arts and AP’s are not mutually exclusive. You can take arts classes which can be attractive provided that you take advantage of the rigor offered at your school. Some students may want to take advantage of on-line courses such as NCVPS (North Carolina Virtual Public School).
AP’s in multiple subject areas is preferred. UNCCH accepts students into the College of Arts and Sciences, not a particular “school”. If you plan to study pre med for instance, it doesn’t bolster your case to have a ton of AP sciences, because you’re not accepted into a pre med program, you’re accepted into the college of arts and sciences. UNCCH values the well-rounded student.
IB and AP diplomas, while attractive, are not necessarily preferred. They are merely pre-packaged rigor. Your curriculum can be rigorous without a pre-packaged title. You do, however need to take advantage of the rigor offered at your school.
There is definitely room for music and arts in your resume. Use your essays and recommendations to “tell your story”. UNCCH is looking for students who can write well in an engaging way. Show how you’re well-rounded beyond your GPA and test scores. Your voice must come through in your essay! Tell about your passions, your leadership, some of the challenges you have overcome. If you had to make curricular choices due to your passions and/or scheduling constraints, explain in your essays. If you did a senior project that reflects those passions, explain it. TELL YOUR STORY!!!
One of the big misconceptions is that UNCCH looks at your GPA. This is not true. They look at the un-weighted “letter grade”. They do expect you to take rigorous classes and expect more A’s than B’s, more B’s than C’s. Students with C’s do not often get into UNCCH. Take rigorous classes along with your arts classes and do well in them! It does not help your case to take an AP class then get a C or D thinking that a “B” is a 5.0 and a “C” a 4.0. It doesn’t work that way, although they do want to see you take the more rigorous course.
They consider your high school experience much more than your SAT score. “The SAT represents four hours on a Saturday. Your high school transcript represents four years of work.
Athletes, artists, musicians, participants in student government are not favored over each other. UNCCH wants to admit a well-rounded class.
Think of your high school experience as a cupcake. Your academic performance is the cake, your test scores might be the icing and the extra-curricular activities might be the sprinkles. The sprinkles are part of what makes the cupcake exciting! Pursue your passions and do your best.
